How to Recognize Phishing and Social Engineering

Description

This course is designed to help election officials recognize and respond to phishing and social engineering threats that target election operations, staff and sensitive data. It reflects the real-world communications, responsibilities and pressures election offices face, with a focus on practical, defensible actions that reduce risk and protect public trust.

In this course, we:

  • Explore the evolving methods threat actors use to social engineer or “phish”
  • Identify ways social engineering or “phishing” can impact elections
  • Recognize how protective and mitigative measures can safeguard election infrastructure

We highly recommend learners take this course:

  • Before major election events or as part of annual security training
  • Alongside incident response and continuity planning training
  • Whether they are full-time, temporary or vendor-facing staff who handle election communications

This course should take approximately 60 minutes to complete.
